Sleep as a biological necessity plays an important role in the mental health and physical well-being of individuals. It is estimated that 30% of the world’s population suffer from some type of sleep problem. In Sweden, almost 50% of people aged 45-64 in 2022, reported that they have sleep difficulties and of these, 9% rated their sleep disorder as serious. The rest had mild problems. Women reported more sleep problems than men. According to a study conducted by the Society for Women’s Health Research, comparing the sleep habits of men and women, women need longer time to fall asleep. It is likely that women experience insomnia and sleep disturbances more than men due to hormonal changes.

There is a wide variety of products on the market that can help against various types of sleep problems, anything from sleeping pills to food supplements and different apps. What we also know is that many people suffer in silence from sleeping problems and do not do anything about them. Mainly because there is a fear of becoming dependent on medication with unpleasant side effects. Herbal based products are popular, and many of them have been used for centuries by humans as they are thought to be able to relieve sleep problems and have a relaxing effect.
